What is a DNSP?
A Distributed Network Service Provider (DNSP) is the company that owns and operates the electricity poles, wires, and infrastructure that deliver power to your home. In Mackay (postcode 4740) and across regional Queensland, the DNSP is Ergon Energy. It is important to understand that Ergon Energy is separate from your electricity retailer — you can choose your own retailer, but you cannot choose your DNSP.
Ergon Energy & Solar Export Limits in Mackay
When you install solar, Ergon Energy sets limits on how much electricity your system can export back to the grid. These limits protect network stability across Central and North Queensland. For Mackay residents:
- Fixed (Basic) Connection: Standard export limit of 5kW per phase for single-phase properties. Three-phase premises may export up to 15kW (5kW per phase).
- Dynamic Connection: Ergon Energy's flexible export program allows eligible customers to export up to 10kW per phase when the local network has spare capacity. A minimum export floor of 1.5kW is guaranteed at all times under normal conditions.
- Internet Requirement: Dynamic Connections require an inverter with Wi-Fi or ethernet connectivity. The system receives capacity signals from Ergon Energy every five minutes.
- Application Process: Your CEC-accredited installer lodges the DNSP connection application with Ergon Energy on your behalf — you do not need to contact Ergon directly.
Understanding the export limit is crucial when sizing your solar system and deciding whether battery storage is worthwhile. A battery can store surplus generation that would otherwise be capped by the export limit, maximising your savings.
